Free Fishing Days

Fish free in Kentucky Saturday and Sunday, June 5-6. No fishing licenses will be required but regular creel and size limits apply. More at www.fw.ky.gov.

Kentucky isn’t alone in this fishing promotion. Most states host free fishing days in June as sort of a try-it-before-you-buy-it proposition. A partial list of participating states is at www.freefishingdays.com.

Financially, it isn’t much of a deal as licenses are the least expensive part of any fishing trip. As promotion, however, it’s genius. The only thing wrong with free fishing days is that states don’t offer enough of them. I’d like to see a free fishing week; not just a weekend.

My advice is to go. New to fishing? Forget the stuff you see the pros doing on TV. Only one rule applies: keep it simple. Hook. Sinker. Floater. Bait (Artificial lures are a multi million dollar business but worms or crickets consistently catch fish.)

Fish near wood or grassy cover. Start with your bait 1 to 2 feet deep. If you don’t get a bite; try 3 or 4 feet. Docks and piers are great fish attractors.

Take snacks (for you, not the fish). This is especially important if you have a youngster along.
