Spent a couple of hours on Kentucky’s Elkhorn Creek last week with Lee McClellan and Dave Baker.
The water was low, clear and surprisingly cold, the result, probably of a couple of recent below freezing nights.
Fishing with a light spinning outfit tipped with a pin minnow Baker landed three smallies from an eddy about the size of a dinning room table.
McClellan – a committed jig man and one of the best and most determined smallmouth fishermen I know – hooked and lost one.
I was armed with an 8-foot, 5-weight and managed to hook then lose one on a black wooly bugger.
But on a sunny late fall afternoon the fish were secondary. The scenery alone was worth the trip.
That’s Lee in the photo.
